Why do we bloggers waste screen real estate on affiliate ads? Waiting month after month to reach some ridiculous figure for a payout?

I’ve tried Amazon, Clickbank and several others with little success. Goggle earns a bit as the ads are somewhat targeted, enough to cover my hosting bills most of the time. Direct sales of ad space also helps.
